چکیده

Departing from the classical Buckley-Leverett theory for two-phase immiscible flows in porous media, a reduced evolution equation for the water-oil displacement front is formulated and studied numerically. The reduced model successfully reproduces the basic features of the finger-forming dynamics observed in recent direct numerical simulations. PACS numbers: 47.20.Gv, 47.20.Ky, 47.20.Ma

Aharonov-bohm Effect in the Quantum Hall Regime and Fingering Instability

The shape of an electronic droplet in the quantum Hall effect is sensitive to gradients of the magnetic field, even if they are placed outside the droplet. Magnetic impurities cause a fingering instability of the edge of the droplet, similar to the Saffman-Taylor fingering instability of an interface between two immiscible phases. We discuss the fingering instability and some algebraic aspects ...

An island of stability in a sea of fingers: emergent global features of the viscous-flow instability.

The displacement of a more viscous fluid by a less viscous one in a quasi-two dimensional geometry leads to the formation of complex fingering patterns. This fingering has been characterized by a most unstable wavelength, λc, which depends on the viscosity difference between two immiscible fluids and sets the characteristic width of the fingers. How the finger length grows after the instability...

Relative permeability and capillary pressure functions of porous media as related to the displacement growth pattern

Visualization experiments of the unsteady immiscible displacement of a fluid by another are performed on glass-etched pore networks of well-controlled morphology by varying the fluid system and flow conditions. The measured transient responses of the fluid saturation and pressure drop across the porous medium are introduced into numerical solvers of the macroscopic two-phase flow equations to e...

Onset of fingering instability in a finite slice of adsorbed solute.

The effect of a linear adsorption isotherm on the onset of fingering instability in a miscible displacement in the application of liquid chromatography, pollutant contamination in aquifers, etc., is investigated. Such fingering instability on the solute dynamics arise due to the miscible viscus fingering (VF) between the displacing fluid and sample solvent. We use a Fourier pseudo-spectral meth...

Drop in Ferrofluids Subjected to an Azimuthal Field

We perform direct numerical simulations of a non-magnetic drop immersed in immiscible ferrofluids in a confined Hele-Shaw cell under an azimuthal field by a diffuse-interface method. The interface is unstable in such a condition because of the inward attraction of the ferrofluids induced by the magnetic field gradient. We focus on the fingering onset and pattern influenced by the coupling visco...
